Concessive Relationship



Concessive Relationship àThe relationship of two or more ideas which are combined with the following conjunctions:
  1. Despite
  2. In Spite of
  3. Although
  4. even though
  5. Though
Study the following Situation!
Last month, Chia and Davy spent their holidays by the sea. It rained a lot but they enjoyed themselves.
 We can say:
Although it rained a lot, they enjoyed themselves.
Despite the rain, they enjoyed themselves.
In spite of the rain, they enjoyed themselves

The Patterns
Although                             
Even though             + Subject +Verb
Though

Despite                                     a noun
In spite of       + a pronoun (this, that, what)
                                                  verb-ing




Note: although, even though, though, in spite of, despite= walaupun, kendatipun

Although I studied hard all night, I’m not sleepy
Despite studying hard all night, I’m not sleepy.
Even though the traffic was bad, I arrived on time.
In spite of the bad traffic, I arrived on time.
She’s healthy although she smokes 20 cigarettes a day
She’s healthy in spite of smoking 20 cigarettes a day
I still love you though I said bad things about you last night
I still love you despite what I said last night.

Complete with although or in spite of.
1.    Terry decided to study abroad ______ her mother advised her not to.
